Jott Newsletter: May Edition

jott

Hello everyone,

Happy Spring to you all; hopefully warmer weather has come your way. The sun is thinking of coming out here in Seattle but that hasn't stopped us from staying busy around the Jott office working on some great features and celebrating our 2nd birthday! Take a look at all the action…

Jott turns 2

It's been a long and crazy road since we started Jott and April 18th marked the second year of our existence. We celebrated being one of the 3% of start-ups that stick around that long with some cake from Costco. Thanks to all of you for your support as we've grown bigger and better.

Not all Jott Links are created equal!

The results are in and some of the top Jott Links used by all of you are: Google Calendar, Twitter, Zillow, Amazon and Blogger. If you haven't tried out a Jott Link yet, add one to your account today and give it a go! If you don't have time for even that, you can just say "Amazon" without any set up at all. You can find all the Jott Link information you need here.

Simple steps to better messages

While we are hard at work trying to improve the art of voice recognition technology - yes, it's a bit of an art - there are a few things you (and only you) can do to help improve the quality of your messages.

1) Avoid background noise if you can help it:
This seems obvious, but it really does have a huge impact on the quality the transcription. And we're not just talking Rock Concert category noise (though people have tried jotting there). Even a loud restaurant, or multiple people talking in the background, can lead to bad results.

2) Be aware of accents and pronunciation:
We all say things differently. If you're having a hard time getting the voice recognition system to understand the name of a contact, try our 'Sounds Like' feature. You can find it on the Contacts page on the website. For instance, Jott might struggle with the name Mike Krzyzewski…you might want to put "Sheshefski" or "Coach K" in the Sounds Like field.

3) Try not to mumble:
The clearer you speak, the better the transcription – it's as simple as that. The reality is that we all sometimes start a Jott, and then figure out what we're trying to say on the fly. This leads to mumbles, corrections, and lots of "ums" and "ahs".

4) Spell out proper names and slang
You may know how your co-worker's last name is spelled, but sometimes we could use help. Is it Miller or Mueller? Just spell it out and it will be transcribed as one word.

5) Speed kills:
One of the great things about Jott is its ability to deal with normal speech. We've heard that over and over. But one thing that does degrade quality is when we try to jam a lot of speech into a Jott. So we've learned to slow down a little.

Mother's Day is Sunday

Now that we all have Jott, we really have no reason to forget Mother's Day! Set a reminder to give your mom a call on Sunday and make that all important woman a happy one. If you do forget, just hope Mom doesn't know about Jott!

That's it for this month. Keep up-to-date with Jott news by reading the blog, or if you haven't already, become a fan on Facebook.

All our best,
The Jott Team
